Up to thousand streets have been demolished in central Salford in the past sixty years. Communities have been fragmented and dispersed. In response to the clearance of these cultural sites, we are collecting objects from Salford residents as part of the ReTracing Salford outreach project. Using the collection strategies of The District Six Museum, South Africa as inspiration, we archive and preserve images, films, artefacts and oral histories from lost streets. We aim to create an online Streets Museum, to enable families, friends and relations of Salfordians to search for and commemorate their districts and streets. We work with artists, museums, schools, universities and community organisations, in order to develop further research into urban community histories. We are particularly interested in research relating to place, memory studies, city histories and housing clearance.
